I have decided I want to focus on developing the concept of the building which is evident in the original plans of the building. To do this I will focus on light, shadows and form created by the structure. I am interested in bow Utzon was able to grasp complex shapes due to his father being a ship designer, as well as how he was interested in the way light moved over curved shapes. His interest was started when he was below the large ships in a shipyard dry dock which were close together only allowing a small amount of light to move over the hulls of the ships. I have decided to take the image in my mind about what it would look like standing at the bottom of the hulls, and to incorporate it into the building design.
I will have two large hull shaped objects which you are able to view from the main gallery, creating the effect of ship hulls. The light passing over these shapes will change, as the curves of the shapes wll change, thus causing the people within the building to look up. The shadows caused by these shapes will change at different times of the day, as sunlight enters the building from different angles. Im not yet sure how light will enter the underground parts of the building, as I do not want people within to feel out of touch with the surroundings, although Utzons concept was to no distribute the surroundings I will most likely take it the opposite way, making an inviting building exterior which will be able to draw people down into the main gallery of the building.
