250 Words on Jorn Utzon's Silkeborg Museum

The plans for the Silkeborg Museum by Jorn Utzon show an abstract building which contains many curves and abstract spaces. Space seems to be a major aspect of the project, as there are many different types of space, ranging from the massive three floor main gallery space, in which curved ramps twist their way around the interior, to the tall, narrow rooms which are created by curved walls resembling the bottom of ship bows.

The shape of the architecture is vital to the perception of the spaces within the museum, as Utzon wanted to draw people within the building using abstract forms. These abstract forms also add surprise within the building as the viewers become intrigued with the space, and how it is formed. By creating a curved structure, the building would also produce abstract shadow and lighting forms which would add to the intrigue of the space within.

I think that the curved architecture of Jorn Utzon is out of the ordinary, as he successfully uses curves to create interesting space and form. The Silkeborg Museum shows extremes of curved architecture, as most of its main spaces are created using abstract shapes. The building will be very hard to model, and I think I will take the aspects of the building which have been already created, such as its fascination with space and express it further within my own representation of the building.
